Smart or functionalized glazing is an innovative substitute for mechanical shading as well as contributing additional value. An example would be switching technologies that either change dynamically between high and a low transmissive states or to any desired intermediate state.

    • Photochromic: Transparency state is controlled by incident light
    • Thermochromic: Transparency is a function of the device temperature, which is influenced by the incident sun light and ambient temperature
    • Electrochromic: Transparency state is controlled by an applied voltage
