Choosing the right interlayer for structural glazing applications
At this year’s GPD Glass Performance Days conference in Tampere, Finland (June 24-26, 2015), Björn Sanden of Kuraray Europe GmbH presented a paper to delegates entitled “Which interlayer for which glazing application?”
After giving the audience a brief introduction and history of laminated glass, including its original application as a PVB safety interlayer for automotive windscreens, the presentation focused on specific types of laminated glass for architectural applications and the increased performance requirements relating to this.
After outlining the primary types of lamination processes, as well as quality and cost considerations, the presentation then discussed which interlayers are most appropriate for specific applications. This included the main functions and applications for three types of interlayer: standard PVB; structural interlayers i.e. ionoplast interlayers and stiff PVB; and EVA.
The presentation also outlined other performance-enhancing structural interlayers, including acoustic interlayers; security enhancing interlayers (i.e. blast, intrusion, ballistic, anti-spalling); natural disaster (hurricane-resistant) glazing; high and low UV transmission glazing; high durability glazing; low iron glass; coated glass; coloured and decorative glazing; and intelligent glass (i.e. with photochromic layers for varying the levels of shading).
Björn Sanden concluded his paper by discussing the relevant national and international building codes relating to laminated glass and structural interlayers, as well as outlining the calculation methods for determining the strength and thickness of laminated glass for specific load requirements.
